Cáceres

The urban ensemble of Cáceres is a privileged monumental enclave which has preserved significant testimonies from different towns and cultures that have settled in its territory. From the Upper Palaeolithic times to the great urban expansion of the 20^th century, the capital of northern Extremadura proudly boasts a rich cultural heritage, whose excellent conservation led to its declaration as a National Monument in 1949, and its naming by UNESCO as World-Heritage in 1986.

Its Almohad walls and buildings of incalculable historical and architectural value make this town a portrait of the 14^th to 16^th century, as is made clear by its strong houses, palaces and religious buildings.

Cáceres is also the “Third Monumental Ensemble of Europe”, as declared by the European Council, thanks to its magnificent state of preservation. Likewise, it has been recognised by the International Federation of Tourism Journalists and Writers and awarded the “Pomme D’Or” prize for tourism merit and is mentioned on tourism websites such as “Cities of World-Heritage in Spain” (Ciudades Patrimonio de la Humanidad de España), “Jewish Quarters” (Juderías) and “Silver Route” (Ruta de la Plata).

Nowadays, Cáceres is a university and services nucleus of increasing cultural activity, including the celebration of medieval festivals and literary and artistic competitions, consolidated from its declaration as World-Heritage. We find ourselves, in short, with a city that is learning to combine modernity with an exceptional artistic and historical heritage, simultaneously offering in one single enclosure first-class tourism services and one of the most inspiring and authentic trips into the past of the Spanish monumental circuit.
