Plasencia

The city of Plasencia is found in the north of the Cáceres region, within the “Silver Route” and on the edge of the river Jerte. “Noble, loyal and charitable Plasencia city” was founded by the Spanish king Alfonso VIII in 1186. “UT PLACEAT DEO ET HOMINIBUS”, (for what please God and men) is the emblem which marks the coat of arms of the city.

Its structure is like that of all middle-age cities: The radial kind. In such cities whose streets were uniting, bringing together each group of merchants or officials in one single street, those like: Shoe Shop Street, The Street of Cheeses, and all circling its central core which is the main square. Its walled enclosure; built around 1198, consisted of 70 towers and 8 doors and was worked upon for 11 months by 9,000 men. After that time, the castle, towers and walls were configured.

The city was not owned until 1442, when it was handed over to Pedro de Zúñiga by concession of King John II, with the title of county until 1488 which would be passed on to the Catholic Monarchs. From the end of the 15^th century, Plasencia welcomed the most renowned nobles from Extremadura, which led to dukes, counts and marquises residing in the city and leaving, fortunately, a great historical and artistic legacy which mostly remains to this day.
