Este proyecto está financiado por la Comisión Europea en el marco del programa ERASMUS+KA2 “Cooperation for innovation and the Exchange of good practices –Capacity Building in the field of Higher Education”.

Construir capacidades

UEx contributes to improving the capacities of environmental experts in Myanmar

From 1 to 13 July, the University of Extremadura has provided various scientific outreach and dissemination workshops to professors, students and management team of the universities of Mandalay, Mawlamyine and Myeik

50 years of military rule have left Myanmar's higher education sector neglected, isolated, insufficiently funded and inadequate. Within the science sector, Myanmar's university curriculum can not currently respond to national and global environmental challenges: natural resource management, climate change, pollution, habitat fragmentation and loss of biodiversity. These are problems that impact on the functioning of the ecosystems on which Myanmar depends on food, fresh water, health and protection against natural disasters.

Precisely, in this context, it is essential to modernize the curriculum in Environmental Protection, define the curriculum of researchers and train staff and students in Myanmar in new technical and software skills of an international nature to ensure and increase the prospects of the graduates.

This is the main objective of the project 'Supporting the modernization, accessibility, and internationalization of environmental protection in Myanmar's higher education sector' (MuEuCAP) that will be developed during three years in the universities of Mandalay, Mawlamyine, Myeik and Yezin of Myanmar.

This project is funded by the European Commission within the framework of the ERASMUS + KA2 program "Cooperation for innovation and the Exchange of good practices -Capacity Building in the field of Higher Education". Professors Alfonso Marzal, project responsible at UEx, José Antonio Masero and the staff of the Scientific Culture Dissemination Service participate in the University of Extremadura. Other members of this consortium are: Dr. Swen Renner of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Austria, who is also project coordinator, Dr. Christoph Kleinn of the University of Göttingen in Germany, and Dr. Paul Bates of the Harrison Institute Center for Biodiversity Research in the United Kingdom, as well as Myanmar Bird and Nature Society.

Building capacities

Specifically, in the framework of the first workshop entitled "Identifying curriculum, training and equipment needs in Environmental Science", developed during the first half of July in Myanmar, Marta Fallola and Macarena Parejo have given several workshops on communication and scientific dissemination, in line with the objectives of the new environmental protection curriculum that includes outreach and dissemination.

The execution of these workshops, eminently practical (oral presentations, interviews, video editing), have served to develop a series of communication skills that help to strengthen the relationship of science with society, as well as to develop strategies, in order to make visible the work carried out and to raise funds for research. In the same way, during the delivery of these workshops by the University of Extremadura, the concept of scientific dissemination has been discussed and cases of good practices in Spain have been analyzed, such as the "Night of the Researchers".

During these days, the team has analyzed the needs raised by teachers and master students at participating universities in Myanmar aimed at modernizing the environmental protection curriculum. In addition, the project coordinator, Dr. Swen Renner has had the opportunity to explain the progress of MuEuCAP to Augustine Hti San, Project Officer of the Delegation of the European Union in Myanmar. In the same way, together with Paul Bates, the Project Manager of MuEuCAP have held meetings with various non-governmental organizations present in the country to exchange experiences and continue to work on a more attractive education for all social agents in Myanmar.
